M8Z CAFE
In late May 2024, my husband and I were driving around Portugal on our honeymoon when we came up with the idea for a summer pop-up event series… in our apartment. We’d start a WhatsApp group with friends and use a first-come, first-serve RSVP system. The events would be free, we’d play to our strengths (offering only our favorite foods and drinks), and I’d, of course, give each event its own brand identity.
M8Z Cafe was our first event—inspired by my Aussie husband, who makes an incredible cappuccino, and our mutual love for a classic Melbourne brunch. For anyone confused, “M8” is shorthand for “mate,” a term Kale and I often text each other—especially when talking about our dear friend, K8 M8 (IYKYK).
I designed a digital invite, signage for the space (including menus on clipboards for that true cafe vibe), and—because I couldn’t resist—branded stickers for takeaway bags. Although we aimed to avoid buying too many new things, we caved and ordered aprons to really look the part of cafe owners.
The menu featured Melbourne brunch classics, like avocado toast on homemade sourdough, acai bowls (my personal favorite), and a selection of baked goods.
No great event is complete without a thoughtfully curated playlist, so we found one that was just the right mix of upbeat and mellow, perfectly blending into the background as our guests mingled.
